At the Oasis Moreque Hotel on holiday in Tenerife in 1993 when I was 16 I won the adult table tennis tournament and the Pool tournament both on the same day. On the same holiday I also saved someone's life by dragging them out of the sea off the coast so I must have peaked for some reason around then. Represented my school at football, cricket and lots of running events without ever being top class but pretty competitive.

I find it hard to believe no one has run faster than that since 1957.

Second fastest at 800m in the entire history of my school. Unfortunately, the first fastest set his time in the same race I did.

I was considered crap at them all, it was only after school I played football and tennis for Clubs. Mind you I was definitely crap at athletics. Got lapped in the school sports day 1500 metres although did get a big cheer with a Seb Coe like kick off the final bend to destroy the other crap boy down the home straight even if it was 5 minutes after everyone else had finished!!!

Guy I know was a professional cricketer for his whole career, was not from a well off family. He was spotted by Middlesex at an early age, who then paid for him to go to a private and 'cricket friendly' school.
Cricket's equivalent of an academy back then I suppose?

England trialist at Basketball representing the SE of England, Saturday League captain in the Salisbury and District League (proper football), and currently playing in a 5-a-side league at the age of 60. Enough to be satisfied with, without ever being fanatical about success.

Cricket....
None of the kids who played at the normal schools parents could afford the Kent coaching. Hence no normal kids got in Kent team. All grammar school toffs.

Interesting. A pickup/informal game of hockey is called shinny, also called pond hockey. Has to be related.

Shinty, bit like hockey but with what looked like solid wooden branch in the shape of a hockey stick and a ball that weighed a tonne. We usually played this between November and January and I remember not being able to untie my boots after as my hand was frozen in the shape of me holding the stick!
I wish i had more chances to have a go at discus, we had a go in the 2nd year at senior school and I threw it twice the distance anyone else did without much coaching.

When I was young a posh bird told me about a game where posh boys had to cover a biscuit with jizz while the posh girls watched. Seemed like a fun game.

I got paid by Havering council to train as a kayaking instructor as they had budget money left over to spend quickly one year.
My best mate got trained as a mountaineering instructor by the same council.
